The walls of our houses have been decorated with seascape paintings since the art of the secular painting first began to overtake religious works in numbers and importance.  Seascapes celebrated naval victories; they recorded the great ships in the British navy; they depicted scenes in international ports and harbours, and finally, from the late 19th century, they portrayed man at play.

Mark Mitchell Paintings & Drawings can offer some vibrant and compellingly well-painted seascape paintings, varying from coastal paintings by Edward Wesson and Joseph Henderson to paintings of 19th century working boats by, for example, J. Lascelles Williamson.

All these seascape paintings exhibit the talent of British painters and their ability to depict changing light on water and rapidly altering climatic conditions. Many of the artists of these seascape paintings were also talented landscape painters, or worked in other genres as well as seascapes, such as still life or portraiture. Our collection presents the whole spectrum of their work; paintings to appeal to every taste and all sorts of price level.
