Portrait paintings are the one of the earliest forms of secular art, celebrating rulers and other important figures from as early as the 14th century BC in Egypt. The urge to memorialize oneself, and one's family and friends, developed from the more formal mode of portrait painting - of monarchs, clergy and officials - and produced a rich vein of highly collectable work in the modern era. Mark Mitchell Paintings & Drawings has some intriguing examples of portrait paintings, from various periods and nationalities, presented in exquisite frames and affordably priced.

Our collection includes amongst the portrait paintings, for example, a study after Reflections by the Scottish colourist F.C.B. Cadell; our version is entitled, Elizabeth at the Castle tearooms. We also have Augustus John's exquisite pencil drawing of his son, Pyramus, Stephen Rose's watercolour, Leticia reclining, and a delightful portrait painting by the Belgian Jean Mayné, Girl with a set of pearls.

Our London gallery is very easy to find if you would like to see these beautiful works at first hand; just make an appointment and come and see us.
