Interior paintings perhaps fit best into the domestic setting, portraying, as they do, other interior scenes which open up the walls of a house to different times and different possibilities. During the 18th century the interior painting emerged from its place in the background of figure paintings and group portraits to assume a position as a genre all of its own.
The interior painting became the means of recording the inside of great houses and royal palaces - always so susceptible to change, with the advent of each new owner; it also descended in scale, becoming the province of amateur painters - often of young women - who practised their accomplishments by drawing the interiors belonging to their families and friends.
The collection of Mark Mitchell Paintings & Drawings includes some delightful examples of interior paintings, from watercolours of 19th century Vienna to oil paintings of early 20th century Edinburgh. Beautifully framed and competitively priced, these interior paintings will fit perfectly into your own rooms; they will radiate some of their own charm and tranquillity into the interiors where they hang.
